802 (Denmark) – H.I.T.S (single + video)

We’ve already had a Video of the Week otherwise this would be it because the vid here is a fundamental feature of the entire production.

I must admit I had second thoughts about posting it and the BBC would undeniably ban it if they got the chance and show a documentary about flower arranging or baking cupcakes instead.

802 have been here a couple of times before with dark, intriguing work but they’ve excelled themselves with ‘H.I.T.S’, which my knackered ears tell me stands for Hole in the Sky although you could hear Hell instead and it would still fit.

The story is one of good vs. bad in the extreme. The video starts with what looks like one of those Reels or whatever they call them on TikTok in which a Russian car is spun around so fast that the pretty girl in the passenger seat gyrates uncontrollably, legs akimbo, so that anyone that wants to see her panties can satisfy their urge.

(I only know of such things through online research, m’lud).

But it’s worse than that, Captain, as the pretty girl is the villain this time and a victim is buried up to her neck in a very Nordic Noir sort of way. I was looking for Saga Norén or Louise Bergstein to appear suddenly out of left field and make an arrest.

But she isn’t there to be stoned to death on this occasion, rather than to have a noose tied around her neck and the other end to the back of the car. And off the villain goes.

The extraordinarily long rope takes an eternity to unravel but just at she’s about to have her head yanked off the car explodes in a sort of divine intervention, possibly an IED.

Out of that hole up there in the heavens light and good have poured out like a switch has been thrown in the firmament to slay the evil entity.

“Even though the world is fucked, you can still believe in the good” says Andreas Asingh, one of the trio of musos that make up 802 and who collectively look like Emerson, Lake and Palmer meet Jethro Tull.

And it is something they actually believe in – “802 is a mixture of the dark and the light; the outsider who wants to be part of the community. It’s a constant dynamic that we celebrate in ‘H.I.T.S’,” says Andreas.

The video was made by folk that have worked with big names and there is a pull factor towards overly focusing on it.

But you must resist that temptation and listen to a song which effortlessly mixes hard rock with a smidgen of metal and even a dose of shoegaze and dream pop.

802 are Andreas Asingh, Emil Sørensen and Kristian Holbæk.

They will be playing some big festivals this summer including Sweden Rock Festival and Wacken Open Air.
