Discrete Circuitry is Aaron Meagher, who doesn’t sound Swedish and who isn’t. He hails from the Emerald Isle where he spent several years immersed in Ireland’s post-punk scene with the band Felonies.
He relocated to Sweden in 2021 to explore a fresh creative direction, this one blending trance, dance, and techno which he channelled through a new solo project that he called Discrete Circuitry.
And this is his debut single, ‘Ibiza 25′.
I had no hesitation in featuring it on what is my birthday and I’m up for a bit of trance.
It’s a genre (or correctly a mix of them, here) that always gets the feet moving and the head nodding but I often find the sharp, fast paced melodies and the beat speed to sound a little similar, in fact to have Ibiza stamped right through them like a piece of Blackpool Rock.
But Aaron’s done a sterling job here, what with the volume and tempo variations, the underpinning of his creation with a beat that is more rock than trap and the introduction of a vocal that could belong to a choirboy, Iselin Solheim or himself wearing very tight Speedos.
The only disappointment is that it fizzles out suddenly at the end when he could have gone for a big finish but I’m only splitting hairs.
The best compliment I can pay him is that most techno/trance tracks have me wanting to roll back the years and get back on a dance floor in Hï Ibiza or whatever is the top club there this week, as fanciful as that is, but I’m more than happy to loll in my armchair with a cup of Horlicks listening to ‘Ibiza 25′, reminiscing, while appreciating how someone, and a relative newcomer to boot, can find new angles with such an established genre.
That possibly doesn’t sound much like an endorsement but you know what I mean.
