I’ve often been blindsided by songs and it’s fair to say that this one did too.
‘Blindside’ is the debut single from SILUETT, a post-punk band which is based in the university city of Uppsala. Turn right out of Arlanda Airport and head north, you can’t miss it. It has been home to several individuals and bands that have appeared here in NMC over the years and I haven’t heard a bad one yet.
Having said that, it does take a little while to get going, despite strong melodies and having an innovative guitar riff that attracts and holds your attention.
But a minute in it’s as if someone plugged them into the national grid as the song explodes into action, as it does again later on another chorus. Must be an intermittent fault.
I’m not sure of exactly what it’s about but ‘Blindside’ seems to concern being so dumbstruck by an event that the subject is like a blinkered horse that has shed its rider and is careering out of control the wrong way down a one-way street. A situation it isn’t easy to rectify.
So it’s almost out of control itself and I haven’t heard this level of Swedish power punk for a few years now, not since Ambage in fact, a similar band that used to work with the social media influenster Katrin Berndt to make startling videos.
Speaking of which, there are some clever touches to this video as well, by Hannah Curling and Calle Guldbacke, as it appears to contrast their position, which seems to be in a public toilet or perhaps the subway from Uppsala railway station to the town centre, with fleeting, superimposed glimpses of a life beyond – fields, woods, and the seaside.
Then right at the death, pardon the pun, a troop of skeletons waltzes past – “siluetted’ – as if to say – that’s your lot mate, you aren’t going anywhere. This subway is the height of your ambition.
The band is new but the members have been around the block, with others such as Rotten Mind, Earth Girls, Real Tears, and Siamese Twins.
They know exactly what they are doing and it shows.
