We’ve had numerous songs here over the years that related one way or another to dogs but I believe this is the first one concerning a cat.
Cats are part of the family every bit as much as dogs of course even if they are prone to doing their own thing as if you don’t exist until you are required to, and I can comment from personal experience how it can affect you when suddenly they are no longer there.
In Ove Markström’s case ‘Roxy’ was a Devon Rex breed of cat; a tall-eared, short-haired breed that emerged in England during the late 1950s. The breed is known for its atypical appearance, with an oddly shaped head, large eyes, and a short and wavy coat. Slightly oriental looking.
They don’t come cheap, being considered cat royalty by some and costing up to £1200 from a breeder.
And Roxy actually participates in the song, putting in an appearance at the beginning and end of the song dedicated to her, her voice immortalised in a song that is surprisingly upbeat, in the form of a celebration of life rather than a wake.
The lyrics, sung here in Swedish, are poignant, as Ove ruminates over the fact that the only reminders are a picture and “a little sand” and indicates how his wish is to be “taken back” to his memories with Roxy.
Definitely one for cat lovers everywhere
