An intriguing blend of musical styles from Oslo-based alt-pop artist and producer (Ekaterina) Zueva who successively manages to mix an innocent ‘butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth’ vocal contribution into an atmospheric, slightly shadowy single, ‘So Far’, that chronicles the difficulties of moving on from a relationship that has reached the end of its natural life because you have woken up to the fact that you’re simply being taken for granted.
Even so, it isn’t that easy to let it go.
A fairly common theme in songs but she puts a new twist on it by bringing together a basket of styles that emphasise the contradictions in how she handles the situation; in a calm and reflective manner initially, underscored by temperate synth effects and the certainty of syncopated beats, but then followed by a shorter outro in which a dream suddenly turns into a cacophonous nightmare of realisation that her whole world is collapsing around her.
Short, sweet and to the point she knows how to grab and keep your attention.
Initially written in a single day but then demanding extensive development and production, I’d describe ‘So Far’ as two-thirds FKA Twigs and one third Massive Attack if you can get your head around that.
‘So Far’ is the latest single from Zueva’s forthcoming EP ‘miss u’, which sounds like it should be the follow up single, too…
