It’s not unusual to be assailed by ‘muzak’ or wallpaper music or whatever you want to call it these days. You know, the sort of thing you hear while going up and down the escalator in the out of town shopping mall; pleasant enough, keeps you feeling happy and wanting to buy goods, but not particularly desirous of acquiring the music itself.
But that isn’t how it turned out for The New Tigers’ Valtteri Virtanen. He was so impressed by what he heard coming out of the speakers in a clothing store fitting room that he dispensed with the ideas of trying to find out what it was and focused on replicating the vibe with his own song instead.
And as it happens he later found out what the original song was, and it didn’t resemble this one at all.
Fuzzy pop is the name of their game and there’s plenty of that coming from the guitars and synths together with a sort of unusual ‘shoegaze prog’ arrangement that majors on extensive riffs.
‘Flight to Earth is the sort of thing that could have accompanied a 20th century TV space series or puppet show. An engaging listen that will grow on you with each subsequent one.

The New Tigers have released three albums with a fourth on the way in the autumn, and have played live in the UK, Spain, Belgium and Scandinavia, among others. The band has gained a reputation as a fun, adventurous and slightly chaotic live act.
The New Tigers consist of Appu Jasu (vocals/keyboard/guitar), Valtteri Virtanen (vocals/guitar), Janne Kauppinen (bass) and Niko Kivikangas (drums). The band is located in the west coast seaside town of Turku.
