Tulle (Norway) – Skin on Skin (single/future album track)

From the dark, ethereal heart of Oslo Tulle heads remorselessly towards her debut album, due at the end of the year, an event I hope will be coupled with the launch event it deserves.

‘Skin on Skin’ is her fifth release from it and in it she is again delving on the edge, reaching for something before it becomes unobtainable and having the cojones to cross a mined bridge to get there.

Revealing your deepest desires and seizing the moment before the moment seizes you.

So it’s a song about simple longing and a different direction from her previous work which touched heavily on religion, sin, and how the circus mirrors real life although I notice that it’s only four words into the opening line when the “sinners” show up.

It starts off like an episode from The Twilight Zone in the opening section or one of Quatermass and I’d venture Tulle could have written some interesting episodes for those iconic 1960s TV series.

Very few artists do ‘eerie’ as well as Tulle does and despite her explanation of the song you can’t help but feel that it runs much deeper, with references to the belly of the beast – which has multiple interpretations including religious ones – bodies on fire, taking a bite (apples, anyone?), as well as putting skin on skin and people running to save themselves from the things they’ve done.

And the imagery that goes with the song is exceptionally suggestive.

She might be having Rosemary’s Baby for all we know and I’ll wager could write a top song about that, too.

The song was produced and mixed by Truls Andersen, who is responsible for many of the adventurous soundscapes.

The only aspect of the song I’m dubious about – and this is the first time I’ve queried a Tulle song – is the use of a ‘voice under’ (my term), a recording from a news broadcast, perhaps even from the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, which doesn’t add much if anything to the story.

Apart from that, it’s another 9/10 for Tulle. The Apocalyptic Circus is coming to town.
