Continuing with the releases we never got around to a month or so ago is this latest single from Remington Super 60, ‘Time to breathe’.
The band was formed in 1998 by Christoffer Schou. It looks like we haven’t featured them previously (I thought we had) but we have featured another band that Christoffer Schou is connected with, Twirlies.
He says they take inspiration from bands like New Order, The Velvet Underground, The Beach Boys & The Smashing Pumpkins (Adore era) & The Cure amongst others, adding that “may sound like a peculiar combo of inspiration but that’s it!”
Peculiar it certainly is and I can’t easily identify the style of any of those bands in ‘Time to breathe’. Instead, what there is generally is more like an example of shoegaze meets dream pop meets psych.
It’s a breakup song involving two of the leading lights in the band, namely Christoffer and the singer, Elisabeth Thorsen and puts an interesting spin on the end of a relationship when a knot has to remain tied so that the ex lovers can continue their musical collaboration while at the same they seek to re-establish their own individual identity in their private lives.
“It seems we’re going nowhere now/strangers but still close somehow” sings Elisabeth.
And those lyrics are underscored by the contrast between a light, jaunty main theme and a plodding yet cool bass line that serves to emphasis the gulf between the loving relationship and the workmanlike one.
Proving that you don’t need grand compositions to make a point about affairs of the heart.
