I was in the mood for a funky, laid back retro pop/rock track tonight and OCZ didn’t disappoint.
There’s a fair bit to unpack here so bear with me.
Firstly it’s the first time I’ve come across a track with the same title as the very first post on NMC, which wasn’t Lionel Richie or Adele, rather Martin Solveig & Dragonette’s electro pop banger ‘Hello’, as a form of introduction.
Secondly, OCZ (Ole Chrintz) came late into the music business from a successful corporate career as an Executive VP in a pharmaceutical company. You don’t find many of those behind a mic except at the firm’s Christmas Party when everyone’s too drunk to sing anyway.
‘Hello’ offers a first taste of his second album, ’On Display’, out on 4th September.
And the forthcoming album led him to rekindle a musical collaboration with the Danish producer and songwriter Jan Rørdam. The two played in a band together in high school before life took them in very different directions. More than 40 years later, they have found their way back to making music together.
‘Hello’ is a song about loyalty, support and being there for someone – a musical blueprint for what it means to be a good friend. And that suggests there is more to him than meets the eye. Such sentiments don’t always go hand in hand with the corporate maelstrom.
It was inspired by the complications and conflicts that we experience throughout life in our relationships – standing up for someone close to you and recognising their honesty and values and especially when they are going through a difficult time.
Musically tuneful yet undemanding, that’s just the way it should be. It lulls you into the mindset that you’ll do the cooking and washing up tonight to give the missus a break. And if she reciprocates in one way or another later, well all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.
