Nina Vina. Now there’s a name to conjure with. It reminds me of Alison Harrison and Theresa Green and all the (real names!) people I used to interview in my old government service days. It certainly grabs the attention.
Nina hails from Kristiansand on the southern tip of Norway and is now domiciled in Oslo. She’s an exponent of R&B which is a genre that isn’t often found here, mainly because I’m not sufficiently well versed in its ruminations.
But I know an exceptionally good voice when I hear one and Nina certainly possesses one. Expressive, sultry and sexy and with a great range of melisma, it fits the bill perfectly for a song entitled ‘After Midnight’ and is complemented by the funkiest of grooves which sound like the product of an entire orchestra.
The central question here is about “who you want to be after midnight”, when everyday expectations fall away and judging from the lyrics I guess the object might be a one-time boyfriend from whom she has drifted apart and who has forgotten what he is missing after midnight when she comes alive. Not like Dracula of course, but in a sexy way.
There is another interpretation though, that it refers to the creative freedom that arrives when the rest of the world is asleep. With the noise and judgement of everyday life out of earshot, there is room to imagine a different version of yourself, live out your dreams and be whoever you want to be.
I hope that works for Nina. I do quite a lot of my writing after midnight and usually don’t really manage the same effect to be honest. Except tonight of course, when I’ll be everything I want to be and dream only of Nina.
