Want to loosen up for the weekend?
The press release said, “When the news, global conflicts and everyday noise become overwhelming, sometimes all you need is to switch off your phone, get behind the wheel and just drive.”
Oh yes, tell me about it. How many times have I taken that option? (And increasingly so, right now, even if my old banger is likely to be pulled by the cops for any one of many reasons). It’s so liberating, even on Britain’s ridiculously congested roads.
On his new single, ‘Drive’, Danish singer-songwriter Kasper Buch invites listeners on a journey without a destination. It’s a song about escaping that noise, letting go of worries and finding peace in the present moment, like the animals do. They don’t fret about getting that management report in on time, or punching the clock.
‘Drive’ falls into the classic singer-songwriter category. You can feel the open road and the wind in your hair in every line and Kasper ain’t too bothered about adhering to the norms of the modern pop world. His style has worked for many before and will for many more to come.
Think of Chris Rea, ‘Driving home for Christmas’, the lovely Jane Wiedlin, driving in the ‘Rush Hour’, and more appropriately for a Nordic-leaning magazine, Soffía Björg, bouncing along the bumpy Icelandic ring road in an ancient Merc in ‘The Road’.
They are all evocative of the freedom of that road to enable you to be what you want to be, and who cares if that destination never actually materialises. It’s all about the getting there.
The jangly instrumentation and driving beat place you in that driver’s seat whether you want to be there or merely a passenger. You’re in charge and this car can fly like one of Tesla’s.
And I l love the ending where someone seems to pull out a plug in the recording studio. Or perhaps they disconnected the battery on the car. It seems so ironically appropriate. Journey’s over. Back to normal.
