Inki (Iceland) – In this crowd (single/future album track)

It’s always good to hear something new from one of the top songwriting talents in Iceland, Inki, aka Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir.

She continues to work on an album, ‘Locally Grown’, which isn’t about her prowess at cultivating marrows and turnips at her allotment out at Breiðholt, but rather those fleeting moments when everything feels exactly as it should, along with the bittersweet awareness that even as you’re living them, they’re already becoming memories.

That turned her thoughts towards success and how it might better be achieved in this business, or any other for that matter by being somewhere else rather than on a windswept island in the north Atlantic where there are almost as many sheep as people.

But then in a ‘Cheers’ moment she realised that her happiest ones are in her homeland, mixing with her compatriots, joining them at the bar, everyone talking at once, and dancing on tables. I’m not sure about that last bit but I get the message.

So for all the advice to move on and try your luck elsewhere she’s staying put. And those thoughts morphed into the song ‘In this crowd’ in honour of those people.

It must be good because there’s an air of ‘A whiter shade of pale’ about the song, Inki sensing that she’s levitating, the drink hitting hard, while marveling at the misspelled graffiti at the bus station. As she says, many people in Iceland seem to be dyslexic.

But misspelled or not,

“Those words are always gonna last

I’d jump for you no hesitation

There is no me without the past…”
