Bulletproof Poets seek to ‘reinvent’ themselves with their latest EP, 2.0’, the title of which speaks for itself although I often think that a 100% reinvention of anything might be too ambitious and that 1.1 might be a better target to aim for!
A notably erudite band and one that works almost uniquely with the Polish sociologist and poet Monika Kostera who writes most of their material initially as poetry which they then transpose into song, not a minor skill.
Looking at the track list of six songs I was immediately drawn to the opening one, ‘The recipe to survive in a world of alienation’.
It sounds from the title alone like it could have been written by Kant or Schopenhauer and sung by Joni Mitchell and even more so when it gets going with lines like “Always wear something Swedish/Don’t let things cross the threshold uninvited”. And that’s just the opening verse.
All to the background of an acoustic guitar which is being well and truly shredded and drums that John Bonham is battering.
It carries the same vibe as the likes of Zager & Evans’ ‘In the year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)’ and Hedgehoppers Anonymous’ ‘It’s good news week’.
When you’ve had your fill of Eurovision pap tonight, on Tuesday and Saturday tune into this and you’ll be saved. In fact you’ll wake up as You 2.0. (With apologies to Bono et al).
