‘atom’ Chris Dall & Powerband (Denmark) – Face Eater Blues (single)

I’ve read some splendid introductory PR in my time doing this but I have to say this one takes the biscuit:

“If you’ve ever been angry at the world and couldn’t be bothered to learn more than four chords, then ‘Face eater blues’ is the track for you!”

It’s a version of the Millwall FC chant, “Nobody loves us, we don’t care’, (which was on account of them being the most notorious gang of football thugs in the 1970s). It’s saying, “We’ve got the same musical skills as Status Quo but so what?”

Actually that isn’t remotely true, merely self-deprecatory. All the chords are out in full force in ‘Face eater blues’, there is at least the hint of a melody, the snare drum is screaming for mercy, there’s a false ending, a highly differentiated (fancy, inappropriate words) guitar vs. bass bridge and a brilliant, Hawkwind ‘Silver Machine’- like outro that had me waiting for the “I…I just took a ride…” that never came.

Then there’s Chris Dall’s vocal, which is more like a rock sermon from the mount with every single. He doesn’t take any prisoners.

It’s in Danish so I can’t get to grips with it lyrically but I can say that there is the same air of foreboding and menace about it that the title suggests; something that brackets it with David Lynch and the weird things he got up to. That it might have been a song in Eraserhead.

Head bangers of the world unite and prepare for the coming of the Messiah.

‘Face eater blues’ is the second single from ‘atom’ Chris Dall & Powerband’s forthcoming debut LP.  The song is released on Friday, June 20th on all streaming services.
