Adam Evald (Sweden) – Solklart (single)

Here’s another newcomer for you. Except that he isn’t, well not really.

A master of the art of chamber pop, Adam Evald has four albums with Malmö band Forest & Crispian, two solo albums and three world tours under which he pretty well covered the entire globe under his belt already.

The difference is that now he has released his very first song, ‘Solklart’ in Swedish and it’s the first of many from his forthcoming album ‘Helande Brus’.

Because it is in Swedish and there is no English translation of the lyrics available, ‘Solklart’ almost went the way that all too many good songs are going these days, to make way for those that I can interpret.

But I’m glad I gave it a listen because musically it is a little gem of a thing.

‘Solklart’ translates as ‘Sunny’ and it has the same effect as that yellow ball suddenly peeping through the grey clouds of a typical Manchester day.

He knows how to find a tune. And a sprightly beat to go with it.

The song is a feast of alternating melodies vying with each other for your attention, subtle little chord progressions and admirable harmonising.

Lyrically, he could be singing about making love on a summer’s day in a field of bluebells, Mjällby just pipping Hammarby to the Fotbollsallsvenskan league title, or a gangland turf war in Uppsala.

It doesn’t really matter that much because these tunes carry the song on their own.

At the same time I hope he wouldn’t find it churlish, after he’s just released his first Swedish song, if I said I’d love to hear an English version of ‘Sunny’!
