Aggressive Soccer Moms (Sweden) – Crossroads (single/future album track)

A return visit from those post-punk hooligans from the terraces who were last with us as long ago as December 2022 with a song, ‘That’s how I feel’, of dystopian tendencies which incorporated a wide range of musical styles.

Style variation doesn’t get the same look in this time.

Is there such a thing as ‘art-punk’? That is how I would classify Aggressive Soccer Moms based on this new single, ‘Crossroads’.

Indeed there is. Mr Wiki informs me that “Art punk, or artcore, is a subgenre of punk rock in which artists go beyond the genre’s rudimentary garage rock and are considered more sophisticated than their peers.”

Of course the danger of that is that you start to emulate what lies beyond the rudimentary, as early British punk bands have indicated that they even considered doing, mimicking some of the attributes of the very same prog rock bands that they helped eradicate.

Or to use an analogy from my business, when an economy class seat on a budget airline starts to attract the attributes of a business class seat then what is the point of the distinction?

But none of that applies here. They stop short of turning left into the First Class cabin with a hard driving, unrelenting track with elements of Iggy Pop to it and with the same hypnotic beat, underwritten by a thumping bass, as Torres’ ‘Concrete Ganesha’, which puts them in my good books straight away.

With nine albums under their belt, the last two years have not been as productive as the band focused on live performances but now they are back with full energy and you’d better believe it.

It’s hard to credit that these guys are in their 60s; their energy, even on a studio recorded song, is palpable. I’d almost be scared to see them live.

They’ve so much vigour in fact that after 10th album ‘Winning is banal’ is released on 29th May at least another two albums will be released this year.

It just struck me that ‘Crossroads’ is exactly three minutes long. Eurovision length.

I’m tempted to suggest it to the Melodifestivalen for next year as a cold shower remedy to the sauna.

The duo consists of Anders Bergström and Thomas Wahlström.
