Delish (Norway/Sweden) Talk (track from forthcoming debut EP)

Seeing Jenny Haval’s name mentioned in the PR as “a sometimes collaborator” convinced me to check out the mainly Norwegian – but with some Swedish input – Delish. Ms Hval is an acquired taste but she’s talented for sure so any ‘collaborators’ must merit scrutiny.

‘Talk’ is the first track to be released from Delish’s debut EP ‘The Dip’ which is slated for a release later in the year. The PR mentioned Twin Peaks, which usually grabs my attention as well. There’s an uncanny connection between this music and the TV series and film. It goes well beyond ‘ethereal’, the usual adjective we casually throw out in these circumstances and into the outright surreal.

It would make for an excellent soundtrack for a prequel to the prequel, if David Lynch ever made one.

The vocal harmonies come from Natali Abrahamsen Garner and they’re in the 10cc ‘I’m not in Love’ class. But even more impressive is the way the mood is allowed to develop as if it has a mind of its own, courtesy of not so much haunting as daunting synths. The last minute or so is almost orgasmic. Am I allowed to say that in a family blog? It would suit a classy horror movie, let’s say ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ for example, perfectly.

Delish (Natali Abrahamsen Garner, Johan Lindvall and latterly Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard) consider themselves to be as much of an art project as an alt-pop trio and their live shows are said to lean heavily on performance art and theatre; as much as on the music itself. Which brings me back to where I started and Jenny Hval, whom I once saw performing a song lying on her stomach on the stage floor, covered in blood.

If Delish have taken any of that from their dealings with her it would be well worth the effort to seek them out.

‘Talk’ is out March 11th (Sheep Chase Records)
