Amalie Skriver paid us a couple of visits last year, one in which she also won an international songwriting competition with the first single we heard, ‘Uncertainty’, which dealt with the trials of an on/off marriage ceremony during the Covid pandemic.
That she can write and perform hard hitting songs about difficult subjects is no secret but what she also proves again here, with ‘Waiting here for you’ is her ability to wrap it all up in a cosy blanket that will entice any casual listener.
The subject this time is infertility; one that is not new to NMC as a couple of female singer songwriters have dealt with that topic, one of them recording an entire EP about her struggles.
Nevertheless it requires guts to air these feelings in public and she does it remarkably well in a song that hits the spot perfectly: not too cloying but not too matter-of fact either.
Against a backdrop of a simple piano motif that is on repeat throughout like it’s counting out time, she recounts elements of treatment in a way that a fellow patient might easily resonate with, especially those undergoing it for the first time and which is her reason for recording the song in the first place.
And thrown into that ring are some choice lines that emphasise the pain and longing of being in that position:
“I’m waiting for you to come/You’re already a part of me
Why is it taking so long?/And they said it was easy
I stand in line just waiting here for you…until our paths entwine.”
Compassionate, thoughtful and educational all at once. A rare blend in today’s musical world.
