It certainly is, and in many ways.
Ever since the first time I heard Bellefolie I’ve held the opinion that they possess a quality that demands attention, one that transcends Norway or even Europe, and that they will get it, big style, when they release their debut album, which will be in October or November.
They even do “Camus-inspired” lyrics and anyone that even associates themselves with my favourite existentialist (or should that be absurdist – discuss) has done a better deal with me than the Orange Man could ever achieve.
They tell us that the album “explores the many shapes of humanity in crisis, reflecting on a hyper-digitalised everyday life and the confrontation with both inner turmoil and global unrest.”
That gives them so much to go at and this single, ‘It’s Time’, alone, “about letting go of the façade and standing in the discomfort of being truly seen” can be interpreted as personal introspection or about how so many of us are “living a lie”, meaning one in which we are sociologically indoctrinated.
‘Always leave ‘em guessing’ is the mantra of so many successful musicians.
Musically, its trip hop-cum-electro pop in a style that is unique. I reckon they’ve invented their own genre; one that oozes atmosphere in whatever style they choose to play.
Writer and singer Isabell Aga Engelsen refers to the likes of Susanne Sundfør, RAYE and Björk in describing where their sound “lands” but personally I’d opt for latter day Of Monsters and Men although I must admit part of that is down to the similarity in vocal delivery between Isabell and Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir .
It’s that indefinable, imperceptible meeting place between little girl lost and empowered woman. She simply nails it, every time.
