Dag och natt (Sweden) – Falling the same way (single/future album track)

There’s an interesting story behind Stockholm-based Dag och natt (Day and night) and how they got their name.

It appears it was chosen with intent, reflecting the band’s desire to explore both the light and dark aspects of life through their music.

They even considered forming two separate projects – one light and one dark – with the same members, which would have been something to behold. Would one play in the dark while the other was brightly illuminated? Who would take to the stage first and would it be decided by the mood on the night?

However, they did abandon this concept in favour of bringing everything together under the name Dag och Natt with a better outcome: the embodiment of both joy and struggle, brightness and shadow, mirroring the interplay between day and night.

They also have this notion of writing in a secluded cabin in the woods, cut off from the outside world and where the focus is solely on the music. I hope it isn’t too secluded. Or have I watched The Blair Witch Project once too often?

More intriguingly still there is no predetermined structure or rhythm and sometimes a song will come forth out of a bass line; the first time I’ve heard that in respect of this sort of music.

Lyrically, their forte is duality, which I thought belonged in quantum physics until I realised that in their case it means contrasting love and loneliness (can you not experience both?); strength and vulnerability; connection and isolation.

Their debut album embraces these themes, allowing light and darkness to coexist.

Rather than offering answers, Dag och Natt seeks to create space for listeners to reflect on their own experiences, embracing both the challenges and the beauty of life.

Now perhaps that sounds a little highfalutin, even pretentious but it isn’t at all.

‘Falling the same way’ kicks off in much the same way as any amount of jangly guitar supported dream pop/psych songs but they know when to put the brakes on to conserve the light and equally when to put the pedal to the metal with an impressive layered, heavily orchestrated, synthesised and multi-tracked vocal outro that somehow manages to collapse from a Supernova into a Black Hole.

I’d love to hear it live! (Hint).

Their forthcoming debut album ‘Years and Years’ is set for release on August 15th.

‘Three ladies and a gentleman making music’ is how self-effacingly they describe themselves. Believe me they add up to much more than that.
