Emma Lindquist seems to be in something of a quandary. On her single ‘If I met somebody new’ she’s either been dumped or she’s so terrified of the prospect that she’s become paranoid about it, prompting her to challenge her partner directly to tell her how they would feel about it if the boot was on the other foot and she dumped them for somebody new. (Notice the selection of pronouns, do I get Brownie Points for that?!)
And there’s something both passive and aggressive about her reaction to those events, her vocal wavering between uncertainty (“Am I delusional”?) and determination to see the matter through to a conclusion, once and for all.
From “all I want do is text you to say I miss you” she switches to a plea to “lay it on me please” as she “can take it” before revealing that she’d soon be there to “clean up the shit she caused”.
Emma runs the gamut of the confused emotions of the scorned woman as the tempo rises from the gentle Glen Campbell-like acoustic guitar strummed notes of the opening bars in the way of a well-planned assault on Mount Everest, until at the end she’s shouting so long and hard you’d be able to hear her over the air raid sirens.
In other words, she makes her point forcibly, no matter who hears it, demonstrating that her womanly strength will win in the end. Vulnerability is, you know, so passé.
Musically, it is indie pop but with a strong dose of Americana vibes thrown in for good measure.
The single is from her forthcoming debut album ‘Hello tiger, be my friend’. I’m trying to imagine how the single would fit into the album if it turned out to be a concept one, telling a story over one or two sides as that title suggests it may be, but I’m drawing a blank.
We’ll just have to wait and see. I hope it won’t be too long.
