Fernando’s Eyes (Sweden) – The fire of the night (remixed single/previously released album track)

When we featured an earlier single from Fernando’s Eyes this year, ‘A million times’, from a since released album, ‘Centre of your world’, we identified him as a purveyor of anthemic, cinematic dark pop, but one ‘of the street’ so to speak. No airs and graces.

Following the release of that album Fernando Honorato, to give him his full name, returns with his fourth single, ‘The fire of the night,’ which was released on October 24th, having previously appeared on the album.

It’s a song about losing yourself in music and dancing while letting your mind wander to brighter places. Strangely enough I was writing about another Swedish artist yesterday and her latest song and how that evoked an image of the Nova Festival and those that perished there doing just that.

Fernando has mixed his album track up a bit, shortening it by almost 90 seconds as an enhanced gravitas radio edit and remixing it. The former procedure is to grab and retain attention, which I am very much in favour of while the latter…well regular readers will know I am often not enamoured of remixes.

But this one does cut the mustard.

Much of that remix lops off a lengthy guitar intro that does admittedly impact a little negatively on the moodiness of the original piece but that’s the way it has to be with the streaming generation; you abide by their lack of attention span or you fall by the wayside.

And the effect now is that it comes in like a steam train and sounds like it escaped from M83’s ‘Outro’.

It truly is a Grand Edition mixing power driven hook-filled rock with a hint of psych and even U2.

There has to be a cinematic home for this, just as the epic film Battleship Potemkim was cut to Arcade Fire’s ‘Intervention’ and likewise Lars von Trier’s Melancholia was to the aforementioned ‘Outro’, by amateur film makers with genuine talent.

What I can’t get out of my mind is the “is it or isn’t it” comet, 3I/Atlas, a visitor from another part of the galaxy, which will disappear from view behind the Sun in three days time, appear on the other side at the end of November and then come closest to Earth on 19th December, just close enough to be another ‘Star of Bethlehem’ 2025 years on.

Unless it changes course directly towards us of course. Then all bets are off.

I’ve been waiting for someone, anyone to write a serious song about this event, because there is a scientific caucus that says it’s an alien spaceship or probe rather than a comet.

Perhaps that song has already been written and it’s right here. It has the title, the ambition and the bombast for sure. And I’m certain Will Smith will be playing it through his headphones as he aims his F-35 towards Atlas and its evil aliens.
