Flora Smith is gearing up towards the release of her debut album ’The concept of love’ later this autumn with a single, ‘Angels are crying’.
She’s moving faster than 3I Atlas, the ‘comet’ that is coming our way over the next month or two with little green men inside it if you believe the rumours. Only bursting onto the scene in 2024, she’s already released a string of singles and an EP, this summer, and she’s as adept at covering big name artists (and you don’t get any bigger than The Beatles) as she is at writing her own songs.
‘Angels are crying’ is very much one of her own. While her influences include the likes of Amy Winehouse, Flora is fast developing her own style to the point where you know that you are listening to her the moment you hear her voice. There can be no mistaking it.
It is as individual as Sade’s was when she amazed everyone with ‘Your love is king’. Flora’s songs are replete with soul but what makes her stand out is that just as with Sade you can’t help feeling she is singing directly to you, and you alone.
Musically, there are some nice touches, such as the pedal steel guitar that gives it a slightly American feeling.
And she does it with such a colloquial style. It’s more like a fireside chat.
I was tempted to describe it as a lullaby but you aren’t going to be dozing off to Flora Smith anytime soon. Watch this space.
