The duo GLIMTVIS (Rasmus Pedersen and Rikke Egholm Ravn) have racked up a number of mentions in NMC over the last few years and partly for the same reason – their penchant for discussing elements of adult life that often don’t appear even on social media.
In the past they have included the pain of divorce, the uncertainty of trying to find another ‘one and only,’ and being the last wedding reception guest, stood alone at the closing bar, while all the others are slowly smooching away to Elvis’ ’Can’t help falling in love.’
Love and loss are at the root of their songs and with their new single ‘I Wish I Was In Love, GLIMTVIS examine the prospect of wanting love while no longer daring to reach for it.
Someone who misses falling in love, but has learned what pain means a little too well. Once bitten twice shy as the proverb goes, or “to save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn” as Fiona Apple put it a little more succinctly.
“Missing being in love, but fearing it more than you miss it,” is their take. “I still feel a thousand miles from trying to call you mine”.
A thousand miles seems to be the common yardstick for this sort of thing. I recall those good looking Proclaimer twins proclaiming
“But I would walk five hundred miles/And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles/ to fall down at your door”.
You might argue that at least they had some spunk and were prepared to make a serious physical effort to face their fears.
Whereas the Glimtvis song here is perhaps more in the category of that mass vacillation by US bands in the 1970s where matters of the heart are concerned, as exemplified by Foreigner:
“ I want to know what love is/I want you to show me”.
The words of a dithering dick, as I recall being called in that era!
There’s a degree of 1970s Americana in the song that could even convince you it had emanated from California at that time. It is smooth and light and carries a strong bass line in accordance with the Yacht Rock era of the 1970s – 80s and is very pleasant on the ear as is always the case with GLIMTVIS.
The song was produced in collaboration with GLIMTVIS’ longtime guitarist, creative partner, and producer Lucas Illianes.
