Helena Montgomery, a frequent visitor to these pages over the last few years, releases her first single for 2026, in anticipation of an EP (‘Redfining Peace’) that will be released in April.
I suspect there is some symbolism in play here. The first few lines alone reminded me that she parted ways with her band about a year or so ago. Whenever that happens it causes pain and regret whatever the circumstances and whoever is the right and wrong and especially so to someone who came late to the music business.
If I guessed right about that it is clear she has chosen to rise above it all and be magnanimous, viewing it positively as a case of one door closing and another opening; a catalyst to something at least as rewarding.
“Nothing is the same/I’m slowly rising again
Finding the way/Finally earning my place.”
As it continues it is almost a call to arms, but for the need to move on, not to indulge in recrimination.
There is never any ambiguity with Helena Montgomery. She makes her point quickly and often reiterates it until there is no doubt that you understand it. The message here is the one on the tin and is forcibly stated as much as sung: ‘Keep believing’ – and it’s one that applies equally to young musicians because no-one is in for an easy ride in the music business and you’ll have to “earn your place”.
While the message is plainly stated the music that accompanies it is almost experimental in places; mesmerising low electronic bass notes mixed with a rock beat create a sensation of being ‘on the road’ and all that implies for the meaning of the song.
As I’ve said before, you never know quite what to expect from Helena Montgomery.

The next song (‘Unstoppable’) will be out on 20th February and I’m fairly confident I know where that is taking us.
