I couldn’t resist looking into this one when I read this comment in the press release “she was born with a Stetson on her head”. Lord have mercy, it’s Cowboy Lisberg.
Kristel Lisberg’s new single ‘Say Goodbye’ might never have been made.
She felt she had the songwriting talent and that she had to be in Nashville rather than Torshavn in order to prove it. But that wasn’t happening until the intervention of a friend who got her into a top Nashville studio recording a song with a top producer.
12 months later she was there permanently, driving a 1960s Chevy and working with two American songwriters that “saw something in me that I might not have been fully aware of.”
They also admired her bravery for travelling alone to the US of A to pursue her dream. A smart move as Donald might say.
Hence this song, which is her way of recognising strong independent women like her; the sisters that do it for themselves. Those that say goodbye and swiftly move along. Heck, she might be the White House Singing Press Secretary next.
I suppose it helps that the Who’s Who of Nashville seems to have been at her disposal in helping to record ‘Say Goodbye’ including musos that have worked with Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Elton John, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Willie Nelson, TOTO, Bon Jovi and far too many others to mention.
And you can tell that in the first few seconds. With all due respect to recording studios throughout the entire Nordics you won’t get a better version of this song than was achieved here.
Speaking of Chevys, the song kicks off with what sounds like the jumbled instrumental start of Arcade Fire’s ‘Keep the Car running’ but quickly gets into its stride with fast, melodic interplay between guitar, pedal steel and banjo by the sound of it.
Add in memorable choruses, the requisite C&W feel good guitar solo and the sudden end which says ‘haven’t got time to hang about boys, gotta go’, and you have the perfect modern Country single.
Lyrically, the key line arrives early – “I’m only here for a minute/like a western movie with a cowboy in it”. She’s going places and she knows it. She’s got more miles to put on those boots, and they weren’t made for walkin’. So she’s saying goodbye even before she says hello. Cute.
Watch your back, Taylor, you’ve got competition. She’s on your patch and she’s not whinging about ex-boyfriends.
I don’t know, all these Faroese rocking the music world. Who is going to shear the sheep?
