Kristi Brud. Sounds like a North American politician. Or a South African model.
It’s neither; rather Kristi Brud is a Norwegian rock band that I really ought to have known more about already, especially as it is a Spellemann award winner in the rock category.
They got that award for the 2023 debut album ‘Alt er nytt’ (‘Everything is new’) and now their second album is in the works, ’Et fall!’, (‘A fall’)to be released on 31st October.
The second teaser from it is ‘TENK OM DE VENTER PÅ OSS’ which translates awkwardly as ‘THINK IF THEY ARE WAITING FOR US’, but blame Mr Google for that.
It’s both unusual and not unusual by our measure. Not unusual in that it is just one of several pieces we’ve heard lately that could be the soundtrack for anything from a road movie to a TV advert for Audi as the latest example of ‘vorsprung durch technik’ barrels its SUV frame through the Atacama Desert or across an Icelandic glacier, as if anyone would want to drive there any way.
Unusual in that at the same time other features are thrown into the melting pot. There is a distinct sensation of Kraftwerk-Lite for example, while they build tension in the way Michael Mann used to do in his TV shows like Miami Vice and films like Manhunter.
Then again there’s a catchy, poppy side to it with jangly guitars aplenty and a memorable hook. At a pinch you could even dance to it. I mean dance, not head bang.
And then all that is mixed in with a punky rhythm and vocal delivery.
In Athletics terms ‘TENK OM DE VENTER PÅ OSS’ is a decathlete.
They say they aren’t easy to categorise and I concur. Not quite finding a new genre of their own but well on the way to it!
Kristi Brud will be touring through Norway and Sweden in the following months. A little excursion across the North Sea would be welcome.
