With Brigitte Bardot so much in the news recently this quite sultry new single from the Danish-Corsican Malu Pierini arrives at an appropriate time, n’est-ce pas?
She previously appeared in these pages in March 2025 singing an elegant little song about first dates in the `60s/70s style that predominates here, too.
Imagine Bardot and Jane Birkin, both breathy singers, rolled up into one and et voila you have Malu, who simmers her way seductively through ‘Pourquoi’ (‘Why?’ but you knew that), which is a song about giving everything to a love that does not return the same devotion. Why indeed. One of the mysteries of life, Manu.
It seems the storyline is based on that of her grandmother, who travelled to Paris as a young dancer, drawn in by the stage, the spotlight and a sweeping romance. But slowly she realised life was not the dream she had imagined.
But there is a twist as ’Pourquoi’ is also existential because it explores how the smallest choices ripple across time, eventually carrying Malu – 60 years later – onto a stage just as her grandmother once stood.
She conveys loneliness very well with no-nonsense lyrics; even to the point where I considered asking if she wants to share the apartment she is using in the video, set in Montmartre, one of Paris’ more iconic locations.
Montmartre was also the home of Papillon of course and there is something butterfly-like about the character she portrays, wedded to her appartement while her beloved lives only a short distance away in the Ile de France with mother but she can’t bring herself to bridge that gap despite there being “a baby on the way” (if I understood the lyrics).
There’s a nice, easy on the eye beige-filtered video to go with it as well, by Julie Montauk.
On January 30th, Malu Pierini will unveils her debut album, ‘Libera Me’.
