Marte Eberson (Norway) – Paradise (single/possible future album track)

A reinvigorated Marte Eberson continues her steadfast journey to her third full length album, one she says will be “her most personal yet” with this latest single ‘Paradise.’

A covert, sometimes unrecognised, philosopher, Marte sings here of the benefits of those quiet, invisible moments when you feel the sun on your skin (unbelievably we’ve had a month of that here in the UK so that line hit the target straight away), smell the scent of a flower and catch on a distant radio that long forgotten tune you first fell in love to, way back in the day.

These are the moments she tries to capture with ‘Paradise’. For me it’s when Manchester United actually manage to score a goal but, hey, each to his own.

In the background she’s surreptitiously carrying on from where she left off in the previous single, ‘Start over again’, in which she rued the loss of simpler times and ways of living. Here she reflects on the most valuable moments being the quiet, almost invisible ones, in a world that moves too quickly and demands evermore from us.

Musically, her journey as a solo performer fascinates me. She’s a karma chameleon that has landed somewhere in the 1960s with this one, somehow managing to unite Dylan with Dusty Springfield or Petula Clark.

There’s even a little descending bass line thrown in that is straight out of The Shadows’ song book.

But most importantly she’s concocted a fabulous melody this time; a dream hook. If there was just one tiny weakness in her armoury in the past it was melodies that were ever so slightly missing something.

But this time she has absolutely nailed it.

Marte is very close to being the finished product now and I get a feeling this forthcoming album will be her own personal showcase in Norway and beyond.
