Mia Dae has been working towards the release of this EP for a while and has featured here with songs from it on three occasions.
I have previously commented on her particular take on feminism, which very much is an in your face version leaving little to the imagination but there are numerous other strings to her songwriting bow including what she calls “inner chaos” as well as climate anxiety.
Despite the latter being the subject of the title track and offered up in a manner that implies a reversal of the Billy Joel line that we didn’t start the fire. as it suggests, I opted to stay away from it because some readers will know by now my view about the ‘climate crisis’ and I would rather focus on where we agree rather than disagree.
Hence for this sample track, the fourth from the EP that we have covered, I chose ‘Doomed’, which might be another apocalyptic nightmare but which instead deals with a mystical, iconic figure, a guitarist, who comes into her life and with whom she is smitten but it’s a relationship doomed to failure because “I could never have you”.
Now that raises all sorts of questions. Is this a married older guy who likes to flirt but knows how to draw the line under uncontrollable youthful admiration before it gets out of hand? Is he gay? Is she imagining the attraction – either hers, or his, or both of them?
“So I surrender to his love, though it doesn’t exist”. Interpret as you will.
I’ll say this about Mia. I’ve always been impressed by how she rocks – and melodically – every time, but there’s plenty in her lyricism to admire too. For one that hasn’t been on the scene all that long she has quickly picked up the ability to channel her ardent feminism to positive purpose instead of moaning about her lot and I increasingly see comparisons with Joan Jett musically and characteristically with Carrie Brownstein.
It doesn’t get much better than that.
The Riot Grrrls live on in Roskilde.
