Remedies (Norway) – On my mind (single/future album track)

Previously we’ve encountered Art-pop (‘Don’t let it in’) followed by a rocker (‘Tranquility’) from Remedies, both of them from a new album that is set to be released at the end of 2025.

Tonight it is the turn of ‘On My Mind’ which is actually the fourth single release from the album (we missed one), a song that explores, inter alia, the human mind and external influences on it.

The rationale behind this one is that to “love” someone can mean letting them go while still keeping them close in thought and heart. They aren’t there any longer but their spirit hangs around.

Hence it is a hymn of bittersweet devotion to someone you hold dear, but must accept you can no longer hold on to, or loving someone through a window – close enough to see the details, but far enough never to step inside.

As I’ve said many times before songs can often conjure up images in my mind from movies and a classic example here might be that scene in ‘Catch me if you can’ where grand forger Frank Abagnale, on the run from the FBI but knowing they are hot on his heels, rocks up at his remarried mother’s home at Christmas and peers in through the window at her very young daughter, knowing that making friendly eye contact with her is all he can do.

There are an interesting couple of lines in the song that I had trouble getting my head around:

“On my mind, you are on my mind/Lovingly but never bound to be”

Eventually I came to the conclusion that means pretty much what I suggested earlier, ‘I see you’, but you are not physically bound to this place (and cannot be again).

Musically it is a gentle pop ballad, the lyrics being the pre-eminent factor, but there is also an unexpected and quite dramatic retro rock guitar solo bridge that doesn’t sound at all out of place.

There’s variety a-plenty in Remedies’ work. No two songs have been remotely the same so far and that bodes well for the album.
