I thought Sara Irisdotter was Icelandic at first but of course ‘dotter’ is spelled differently there and in any case her full name is Sara Irisdotter Aldenmyr.
I know little about Sara other than that she is also an academic, but she reveals online that this latest single of hers, ‘En liten evighet’ (‘A little eternity’) “comes straight from the heart – from memories of times and moments that felt like they would last forever.”
Well now I’ve had recent experience of that, seeing my football team, Oldham Athletic, win promotion back to the Football League a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, and unlike Sara, I am under no illusion that such good fortune will last forever!
It’s in Swedish and I have no lyrical translation so I’ll have to focus on the musical and vocal contribution.
It’s a sweet, tuneful ballad that retains the same soothing tempo from start to finish including through a bridge that is an even more calming version of the verses and choruses.
The song and its delivery is very similar to those I remember from my British childhood – from the likes of Mary Hopkin and Judith Durham of The Seekers – and with that same degree of crisp clarity in every word.
Seriously, the world is in such a mess that there is a distinct market for songs like this; a sort of musical valium that could be administered to overexcited folk without the need for a doctor’s prescription.
Oh, and I just noticed she’s based in Falun, a central Swedish town that I did pass through once and which is home to Floor Jansen of Nightwish and the metal band Sabaton.
It gets better…
