Sebastian Clarin (Sweden) – The weight of a circle (single)

A new name to us here at NMC but recognised as one of Sweden’s, and indeed the Nordic countries’ leading producers of electronic music, Sebastian Clarin on his new-ish single ‘The weight of a circle’ conjures up a sound that lies somewhere between Jean-Michel Jarre, Erasure and David Bowie if you can imagine such a thing, topped off with a sombre, melancholic 1980s vocal that would have fitted any amount of glam/new wave bands from that era.

Ridden with murky, brooding atmosphere it is a piece that might have been recorded at the height of a masked New Year ball in the notorious Berghain in Berlin, attended by Tom Cruise, as it degenerated into chaos and discord.

I don’t know if the title has physical, mathematical or symbolic connotations and frankly, I can’t make head nor tail of the lyrics, while lines like “You said one plus two equals five” fall on stony ground where I’m concerned, as a confirmed Philistine.

Apart from two lines that stood out that is, namely “…Can tell from your eyes, you were giving head like a Francophile.”

Ooh la la. Sacre bleu. That would even have embarrassed Jane B.

It’s riddled with the suggestion of sordid goings on but there is no clear indication if they are actual, perceived, or merely dreamt up.

I reckon you could link it in your own mind to any number of events that hog the headlines right now, from political corruption to questionable ‘business deals’ to the Epstein Files.

Or perhaps it’s just about another night in Berghain.
