Sophie-Lou (Denmark) – How to not expect too much (single/future EP track)

Sophie-Lou (Sofie Emilie Maintz Thorsen) has been here once before, in June, with a debut single, ‘I will love you till I die’, which would be a football song here but which poignantly referred to her mother and which was also a declaration of love to her new partner, friends, and family, all in one go.

A song that suddenly explodes into an overwhelming cacophony of multiple choral voices and distorted guitars.

We described it as a “grandiose masterpiece” and that it was hard to credit it that it was a debut single.

Her background embraced jazz, classical choral works, and ambient and electronic music prior to launching in this new direction.

After losing her mother, Sophie-Lou built armour to protect herself.

But over time that defence only exposed even deeper insecurities. It was in letting her guard down that she began to understand herself and navigate the depths of ultimate grief.

One thing I never got around to saying in that earlier review is how much her rich vocal sound mimics that of the Australian Gordi and this is another example. That is high praise.

The philosophy behind the song comes out of the grief she had failed to process following the death of her mother only to suddenly find a ‘solid base’ (we don’t know what of, probably friends), and a place to live, immediately followed by falling in love.

How to not expect too much can often be the catalyst to finding within yourself what you never knew you had.

What sounds like a manual turns out to be just that.

That vocal apart, ‘How to not expect too much’ is replete with melody. Sophie-Lou knows how to find a tune.

The debut EP ‘It’s easy to be soft’ will be released on 3rd October.
