The Sweet Parade (Iceland) – Asunder: Circles (single)

The last time that The Sweet Parade (Snorri Gunnarsson) was here, about nine months ago, we concluded, and not for the first time, that his lyrics are left open to whatever interpretation the listener wants to put on them, coming as they do from a thoughtful chap that has the ability to identify and interpret the sometimes peculiar actions of his fellow citizens in the way a writer like Hallgrimur Helgason does, or to anglicise the analogy, like Paul Abbott did with TV series Shameless or Derren Litten did with Benidorm.

We are given no hint as to what ‘A:sunder: Circles’, his latest single, is about. I can’t conclude whether the fact that his Dropbox Media press content folder is empty was an oversight on his part or if it is part of an elaborate plot to confuse the reviewer. It certainly had me going around in circles.

Musically it is a guitar-led ballad enlivened occasionally by a stirring synth backdrop and the most musical bass line you’ll hear right now.

But Snorri isn’t so much about the music as he is about the words. Even the title, which is fully A: Sunder Circles although you have to dig around to discover that, seems to suggest it should be filed away on floppy discs that don’t exist any longer.

Unfortunately his voice isn’t the clearest. In parts of the song he seems to sing “Satan feels Cool” and in another “and we lay in the toilets”.

Neither can be correct, surely? Or…

So my point is that he needs to make his lyrics more accessible, or they will be lost on people like me and his music deserves better than that.

He’s also on Bandcamp but not apparently for this single.
