Video of the Week – Helena Montgomery (Sweden) – Beautiful Darkness (single)

One of NMC’s rules is that we don’t usually cover material that is over a month old but we will bend that rule in certain circumstances and one of those when a new video is made out of an old song, which it what has happened here.

Helena Montgomery has just released her first ever music video on YouTube. The song is an old one of hers (2020), but the video is brand new.

Since she was little, she says, she has felt a special sense of security in the dark and has always loved the twilight. So did Dracula, Helena, beware!

Seriously, I get it. The end of the working day for me coincides with the twilight in winter, which lasts for six months in the UK, and I get a buzz out of closing the curtains and turning the TV on for the early evening quiz shows.

I don’t know if the same appeal exists the further north you get in the Nordics where in some places it is twilight all the time but for us southern softies it works well.

Anyway, that is the feeling that the song ‘Beautiful Darkness’ was based on.

It follows a traditional Helena pattern of simple and fairly unambiguous lyrics (although on this occasion I did wonder once or twice if the darkness might be a metaphor for something)…and that are attached to a solid melody and in this case to a memorable piano hook.

But this is really about the video, which is a masterpiece of minimalism, its entire raison d’être being to highlight the contrast between dark and light, which is usually represented by a halo or aurora effect and which it does, exactly as it says on the tin.
