Wyrel (Sweden) – Skeletons (single/future EP track)

Wyrel (Matilda Winberg) has woken up to the fact that love is all too often an ephemeral, transient state of mind. Yep, tell me about it.

Or more correctly she failed to go to sleep with that fact, having written this song, ‘Skeletons’, at two o’clock in the morning, “in the silence”, she says, “when my thoughts were at their loudest.”

Funnily enough I often do my best work at that ungodly hour, so we do have something in common!

Her take is that some relationships never really disappear; they merely morph into something less tangible, like memories, shadows and… skeletons. Fair enough, I can go along with that and it is why, I suppose, that after a relationship ends, especially when there has been a catastrophic conclusion, you often “see” that person, for example passing in a car in a town thousands of miles away and months while you are on holiday, as unlikely as such an event actually might be.

Anyway, she chose to pitch it at the level of vulnerability, which slithers in and seizes control once the battle between resignation and hope has reached its conclusion.

Most people will be able to relate to this concept readily but while it is ‘dream pop’ I’m not entirely convinced that the high vocal pitch is called for.

It certainly purveys the sense of vulnerability very well, but sustained as it is throughout the entire three minutes of the song it does become somewhat cloying and perhaps might have been used more sparingly to better effect.

It is quite charming though, there is a splendid arrangement which sounds like an orchestra of acoustic instruments is brought together towards the end, playing in counterpoint to each other, there are a couple of neat little tricks during which it appears as if she has suddenly fallen off a cliff and there is – to my mind at least – something of her compatriot Skott in her.

‘Skeletons’ is the first taste from Wyrel’s forthcoming EP, ‘Lose My Sleep’, in which each track explores different aspects of love’s impermanence and the traces people leave long after a relationship has ended.

I do hope she managed to get some, eventually.
