‘RESCAPE’ by RESCAPE. They’ve escaped twice? From what? There must be a story there, somewhere.
The band is from Norrköping, which for the uninitiated is in the southern part of Sweden, about 150km southwest of Stockholm. And with that today’s geography lesson is over!
It’s their latest single and featured during the gigs they have been playing live in Sweden recently.
They bill themselves as pop punk / rock, focusing on loud guitars, big hooks, and interminable energy. Personally I don’t hear too much punk in this track but it is very evident they know how to combine driving rock riffs with melodic pop and that is a skill few can master.
It starts off sounding like a paean to The Sweet’s ‘Ballroom Blitz’ from back in the 1970s; that band being one that set the standard in pop/rock fusion. It then quickly morphs into a catchier version of an Oasis song, an overwhelming guitar symphony dominating and vocalist Andreas Pernes sounding like Liam Gallagher wearing underpants that are a bit on the tight side.
The longer it goes on, and complemented by a tasty little shred for a bridge, the more attractive it gets, and the skilful construction with hooks a-plenty and a brilliantly defined outro brings it to a satisfying conclusion as if you’ve drained the last drop of Absolut Vodka at the party and it’s time to hit the sack.
It’s not often I make that sort of comment about a piece of music that isn’t ‘composed’ by a serious musician or band but this one deserves it. The way it is put together is of a very high standard. Many songs I get to hear just fizzle out. This one has you craving more.
If every song is like this their gigs must be dynamite.
In an era when the singer-songwriter and the duo dominate the music scene their ambition to keep the spirit of guitar-based rock alive is admirable and they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it.
And they seem to be having a lot of fun doing it.
It’s a song that, irrespective of your musical tastes, you’ll find it very hard to dislike. With tongue in cheek I venture that if you do you aren’t a Swede. You’re a turnip.
