Anna Ran was last here in March 2025 when we wrote about a sample track, ‘Silence’, from the album ‘Out of Silence’, waxing lyrical about her expansive cinematic music and arrangements.
Now she returns with the first single, ‘Vultures with Guilt’, from her “forthcoming musical release”, which means another album that will come out later this year.
The album’s focus will be “on the outer world that meets the inner world and back out again, in this burning time that creates an inner tug-of-war between hope and hopelessness.”
I’m not at all sure what that means; perhaps it is an allusion to the maelstrom of emotions that surround so many world events right now. I’m a keen follower of events in Ukraine and especially of one young lady, I won’t give her name, who posts on X almost every day about how she and her cat survived the previous night’s missile and drone bombardment but with the heart wrenching wariness of someone that doesn’t believe she will get through tonight’s.
Likewise Sky News just interviewed a female Ukrainian MP who was the epitome of courage and stoicism for 10 minutes until right at the end when she broke down sobbing.
Hope and hopelessness on display in both cases.
Makes me wonder if there is any guilt in the Kremlin?
While a vulture might be interpreted as a Shahed drone here none of this might have anything to do with Anna’s song though. There is an argument that it might single out the arms industry:
“They do it for profit/They do it for fun/They don’t even care if they kill everyone.”
More likely though that it is an attack on capitalism and the worst sort of greed that emanates from it, which is so vast that it is unquantifiable, and which attracts the admonition that “We will never find/peace of mind”.
That and the apathy and inertia which ensure that will remain the case.
Musically, on this song at least, she’s Mazzy Star-dark meets Jean-Michel Jarre. Go figure that one.
