It’s a while since we had some genuine full-bloodied Nordicana in NMC, that meeting place where traditional American country music rubs shoulders with Scandinavian melancholy.
In the case of Emilie Torstensson they don’t just rub shoulders. What Emilie does to Americana is the equivalent of the toughest shoulder charge you’ve seen in the World Cup so far.
She’s a country girl, raised in rural Skåne and she lives on a horse farm now near Lund, while ‘Route 11’, another track on her debut album ‘Homegrown’ isn’t in the American deep south but one that takes her from Malmö to many of the gigs she plays.
She looks the part every bit as much as she sounds it.
I just had to select ‘I don’t care’ as the sample track from the album because both musically and lyrically it has the nonchalance of Nashville written right through it.
She’s been dancing to someone else’s rhythm for far too long and in true Tennessee fashion it’s time to call a halt to that state of affairs and move right along now. It’s a crown of silver hair that she’s proud to wear that tells her that she just don’t care.
Priceless.
