Always good to hear from Flora Smith and her soulful voice and she’s back with a new single, ‘Knight and Shining Armor’ (I used the American English spelling as that’s how it appears in the song title). And it has been released in tandem with another new song, ‘Forbidden Fruit’ as a bonus track.
‘Knight and Shining Armor’ is Flora’s gentlest yet raunchiest ballad to date, with less of the ‘soul’ musically but more of it in the meaning. She’s looking for a soul mate to love her and a whole lot more. “I just want to be talked into bed” she sings in what I can only describe as a come-to-bed voice.
“I just want to be moved…to be pursued…to be loved” she claims in a voice that will have you reaching for the smartphone or laptop to see if she’s on Tinder. It’s that or wading through the Stockholm telephone directory.
If you’re feeling lonely and in need of a little lurve then this is definitely the song for you; you might even be her ‘knight in shining armour’ to use the English idiom for a chivalrous saviour of damsels in distress, usually riding in on a white horse.
And actually that raises a question. Flora appears to sing “in armor” in parts of the song but “and armor” – the title – in others. Is there a hidden meaning there that I’m missing?
The bonus track, ‘Forbidden Fruit’ is more in her traditional laid back bluesey soulful style that makes Sade sound manic and on uppers and is equally raunchy. We don’t find out why he’s forbidden (too old, too young, gay and not up for coming in?…) but she’s obsessed with him anyway.
Past just being an emerging artist now, Flora is stamping her unique style into the Stockholm fabric.
