Lemi is 18 and learning the hard way fast that all men are b******s, whatever their nationality.
Frustrated that her pleas of ‘no’ tend to go unheard she’s fired off this tuneful missive, ‘Monster’, in an effort to regain a modicum of control in her relationship.
Likening them equally to vampires with hands around her neck her instinct is to slay them with a stake through the heart (what else?) And then throw him to the sharks for good measure. Are there any sharks in Norway? That would be taking climate change to another level.
That’s an interesting piece of imagery. The Romanian entry in the recent Eurovision contest, ‘Choke me’, was criticised for overly sexual metaphors when it actually referred to mental health issues but the subject here is simply one of who wears the pants in the relationship.
He might be bigger and stronger, thinking she’s ‘cute’ when she resists, but Lemi is craftier.
But the crux of the matter is that she has the presence of mind to want not to be like him, a monster. 85% of serial killers are male but a 15% female ratio can’t be just brushed aside after all.
Musically, the song is remarkable for telling such a story in less than three minutes, with a constantly rising tempo courtesy merely of just her voice and an acoustic guitar.
And this sort of theme seems to lie well with Lemi. Previous single titles have included ‘Daggers’, ‘Baggage’, ‘Bear’, ‘Blood on my hands’ and ‘Get him gone’. I think we get the message. We just hope he does.
Lemi is Leah Michelle Nygård-Hørberg; she’s from Bergen and is signed to Made Management and Made Music, the team behind AURORA and Sigrid, who are of course also from Bergen.
A nice tune and straight to the point, no hold barred lyrics. Definitely one to watch, just as those two were at that tender age.
Lemi’s EP will be released on 5th June. She plays Bergenfest in Norway this summer.
