We have encountered Marius Ziska once before in NMC, in November 2022 when he was singing exclusively in Faroese and a song which translated as ‘In the Garden’. It was about getting to know your inner self and taking your own spiritual journey.
His motivation is to mix electronic pop music with the ‘melancholy’ of the Faroese nature, which you might interpret as meaning Nordic sadness represented in an entire nation of less than 60,000 people as if it were their raison d’être. As if the song title here, ‘Where did I go wrong’, was the national anthem.
In switching from Faroese to English, the first time since his breakthrough album ‘Home / Heim’ (2015) Marius hasn’t put a foot wrong. It’s a winning formula for sure.
He is apparently one of the most loved songwriters working out of the Faroe Islands and it shows.
His smooth, mellifluous voice, at the high end of tenor, gels well with the ingrained sorrow of the melody.
Marius comes up with a fascinating concept in the song, of getting so far ahead that he left himself behind. I’m not quite sure what that means, perhaps that he got so obsessed with finding the right partner that he lost sight of his own identity. After all, “I don’t want to go back to alone”.
It’s one of those songs that ranges across varying sentiments and invites you to put your own interpretation on it.
And the story continues with a new album that is set for release in January 2027.
