Right now Marte Eberson is performing her album release show for ‘Lights from the Ocean’, which was made available in February.
In typical Marte fashion she does so with a new single, ‘Come on Closer’. I don’t know what the inverse of writer’s block is but Marte has it in spades!
I thought I recognised the title as well. It is so suggestive of the musical domain she has made her own since the 2023 album ‘Free’ – one of intense introspection of complex love lives and relationships where there is a constant duel between the need for romance and the one for self reliance and independence.
The storyline to ‘Come on Closer’ seems to be one of a relationship which languished but which has flickered back to life possibly with the realisation that the positives outweighed the negatives. “Come on over to the other side, I’ll be good to you” is the opening gambit, culminating in “Come on closer, this time I’ll make you stay”.
Sandwiched in between is a beguiling yet understated piano melody and associated beat that rises in intensity in time with the expectation. It’s the equivalent of reading a Mills and Boon novel from cover to cover in three and a half minutes (not that I ever have M&B, mind!)
Pardon me for repeating myself but I’m hard pressed to think of anyone else writing this sort of sultry and sexy material right now and without ever losing sight of high professional standards.
Marte’s favourite artists seem to be those of another era in which songs like this dominated the market and single handedly she is facilitating its return.
In fact Marte has cornered this particular market and if she performs ‘Come on closer’ to her audience tonight (perhaps as an encore) not only will they be doing that, she’ll have them eating of her hand. I hope the venue has an adequate air conditioning system and medics on standby because it’s gonna get steamy.
