It’s hard to imagine any musical artist wishing to leave Iceland and what is probably the most intense and comprehensive scene per capita to be found anywhere.
With one exception and that is that in my experience promotion of Icelandic music abroad has not been perhaps as far reaching as it might have been. It isn’t as if the home population base is big enough to sustain a full time musical career unless you are Björk, Sigur Rós or Of Monsters and Men.
So kudos to Mollý (Malfríður Jökulsdóttir) for writing directly to us about her exploits as a part-time muso, full-time employee and mum of two; a reminder of how many creative artists have to follow that path these days.
She’s currently resident in Denmark where she has secured the support of radio stations while never losing her original base in Iceland. Now she’s signed with two labels, one in Germany and one in Dubai
Mollý has featured here before, in October last year, with a more dancey song, ‘Easy’, than this latest release ‘Aftertaste’, which retains a distinct house feel while entertaining a mainstream pop vibe.
She’s strong on hooks for sure and this one will bury itself in your skull, underpinned by a beat that sounds like a cross being hammered into the ground.
The tenet of the song is that he (I assume it’s a he) is playing fast and loose with her feelings, openly flirting with others, but she just knows that at the end of the day her lingering aftertaste will ensure he comes scampering back looking for more.
It’s darkly sexy and even mildly threatening –
“You’re locking eyes with me/ and everything goes quiet.
I wonder if you’ll be/ the one who starts a riot.”
Then,
“Even when another takes my case/ I’ll never let you be.”
And,
“You try and try to walk away but you want it anyway.”
I think we get the message. The question is; does he? Good luck, son.
This latest single is a collaboration with producer Martin Winther while she also works with NAVAH (Shamal Tashkilot), a Danish-based artist who co-wrote and produced her previous single, which came out in April. She and NAVAH have more coming — their next collaboration together is ‘Homerun’, which is due out on May 22nd.
