We all need some ‘Rosoista voimaa’at times and Piejas kindly supply some examples of what that might be, for example when something has been bothering you; an unresolved argument with a friend; or a relationship that ended badly, adding “It feels like there’s a grain of sand in your shoe that’s annoyingly rubbing against you and won’t let you rest.”
Their peers in another Finnish band sang of mankind having a dream to understand a single grain of sand. But now it’s become an irritation too far.
But fear not. ‘Rosoista voimaa’ is about that feeling of empowerment when you have found the inner grit to overcome your demons or have settled your dispute, and you get to turn a new page in your life – one where the sun shines gently on your face, the wind tickles your hair, hope awakens and you can follow the yellow brick road to nirvana.
The song takes about a minute to get into that gear but then it’s only upbeat in the first and final (outro) chorus. The remainder is quite contemplative in tone as if that grain is stuck in someone’s sock and can’t easily be extricated.
In between we are treated to a variety of pivots from verse to sub chorus to verse via a guitar solo with variations in tempo and key while the presence of a fiddle gives the impression of a rocking hoedown.
And that final little laugh suggests that the grain is no more.
I long ago reached the conclusion that you have to expect the unexpected with Finnish music. You can’t pigeonhole it, it doesn’t meet any parameters, and every new song you hear will bring something new.
And after Iistening to ‘Rosoista voimaa’ I rest my case.
