A fascinating moral conundrum from Denmark’s STAUN (Line Staun Jensen) who, in her second single, recounts her restlessness, feelings and doubts when a past love suddenly reappears on the scene following a long ago divorce from which the subject is only now recovering. The question arises: Should you seek out the past – or let sleeping dogs lie?
To move in again on what could possibly be ‘the one’ or for them to remain ‘Ud i Armslængde’ (’At arm’s length’)?
The song is promoted as a humourous and honest portrait of these doubts and it certainly has its moments, such as when she convinces herself that mutual respect for each other’s potted plants is a basis for getting back together and then reveals that she’s taken up painting, crochet, baking, yoga (to stretch the subject out of her body!) and playing solitaire to distract herself from what could possibly come to be determined as a scandal amongst the trendy and affluent Frederiksburg cognoscenti.
STAUN’s a busy girl for sure and if this little adventure falls through you need to remember that if you dial her up on Tinder.
In fact, on closer examination the lyrics read like prose from a classic 19th Century English novel. Or a monologue. You can easily imagine reading much the same in Jane Eyre as Jane falls hopelessly in love with Mr Rochester or in Pride and Prejudice as Elizabeth Bennet suffers the same fate over Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Musically, it’s poppy, catchy and in both verse and chorus endowed with just the right sense of urgency, one that rises consistently towards the outro as if to say she knows she might have blown it the first time around and damn what the Frederiksburgers might think, she isn’t going to do it again.
For what is only her second single it’s mightily impressive.
STAUN releases ‘Ud i Armslængde’ on August 7th and it is the last single before the debut EP ‘Breve til Bent’ is released on August 28th.
