The Mukherjee Development paid us a visit last year with a song that seemed to have distinct Britpop roots, and with an element of attitude to go with it.
So you will understand how surprised I was to come across this latest release which has an equally distinct country and western flavour to it. The press release compares it to the product of Kacey Musgraves and having seen her live and heard her cutting lyrics I have to say that I concur.
‘Tatters’ is a song about the difficult choices we encounter in life, and about the desire to be liked, even loved, despite mistakes we might make along the way, leaving us in tatters, the same state as the white flag we wave to indicate that the fight is over.
That said there is an element of guesswork about the lyrics, the fact that Bob Seger is mentioned sparking the thought that it might represent some sort of 1960s Jack Kerouac On the Road type of road trip during which a variety of characters are encountered all of whom have felt the urge to throw in the towel at one time or another.
It’s a weak premise and I’m probably wrong but at the very least that supports the conclusion that The Mukherjee Development have vast reserves of variety up their sleeve musically and lyrically know just how to keep you guessing.
