I designated this week as ‘Iceland Week’ having come across this video by chance online after the Krummi/Soffia Björg one.
We don’t cover Iceland adequately but in our defence the PR coming out of the country can be patchy at times.
So it was a pleasant surprise to encounter Valborg Ólafsdóttir who is completely unknown to me but who must have some reputation there having appeared on the same TV programme, Hljómskálinn, on the National Broadcasting Service RÚV, as did Krummi and Soffia.
Neither can I tell you much about her other than that it appears she either runs a guest house or works in one near the Seljalandsfoss waterfall close to the south coast. So she might be a part-time or semi-pro musician. But I also see from her Instagram account that she has a band and that ‘Silhouette’ is in fact the title track of a (second) album released last summer.
But what a great voice. She could probably sing this acapella and generate exactly the same vibe.
There are occasions here when she reminds me of Of Monsters and Men’s Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdóttir, and I thought her vocal was unique. It must be something in the water, Or the Brennivín. Come to think of it there’s an OMAM song called ‘Silhouettes’. Now there’s a thing.
And it’s a neat trick to film your video in the company of what probably passes for Iceland’s densest forest.
Enjoy.
