Video of the Week: Jacob Faurholt (Denmark) – Sugar (alternate mix) (single/future album track)

Jacob Faurholt has visited us a couple of times in the past, under various guises (he is also known as and records as Statisk Støjwhich).

In anticipation of the release of an album, ‘A L O D (Alternate Mix)’, on 8th January 2027, Jacob has made available a single, ‘Sugar (Alternate Mix)’, a typically lo-fi indie-rock track, and accompanied by an equally lo-fi video.

The album is a completely new mix of his sixth album; the 2017 record ‘A Lake of Distortion’, mixed by Jens Christian Madsen and giving the songs a darker, moodier flavour, and inviting listeners to revisit the album. Its release will coincide with the album’s 10th anniversary.

Jacob is from the same style stable as our regular Danish contributor, Slagger Lund. There is a quirkiness about some Danish musos that even exceeds that of their peers in the other Nordic countries.

There are no airs and graces about him at all, and he specialises in DIY music and video projects that “try to make something a little strange and personal” while being slightly unsettling. He prefers it if it sounds and looks a little raw and flawed.

It’s good to know such people exist, working at the diametrically opposite end of the scale to the likes of Taylor Swift and their long lists of writers, and producing work that has at the very least equal value.

So there’s no big production, just the music, his family (a wife and two kids, very nuclear) and a camera.

Musically, do I detect a Brit-pop feel to it or is it just my imagination? There’s a similarity to the work of Mansfield and other Danish bands in there.

As for the video, that comment about being darker and moodier stuck with me. It could be a clip from one of those Scandi-Noir TV cop dramas they seemed to have stopped making now. In fact I’m sure the terrorists dressed up in a similar fashion in an episode of ‘The Bridge’, demanding the Danish government cede The Faroe Islands to Norway or something equally bizarre and prompting Saga Norén to split her leather pants jumping into her Porsche to speed off to confront them.

In other words it’s almost comfortingly wacky.

Jacob has been releasing homemade records for more than 20 years, mostly through his own label, Raw Onion Records.
